ARTIST NOTES: This work is painted on a blank canvas which my partner gave me as a gift. The relationship with him has been for the most part a toxic & abusive one. I recall he gave me the canvas & shortly after we had a fight. I wrote words on the canvas to express how I felt about him at the time. For months I tried to cover the writing by making the piece an abstract until recently when I decided to paint this figure reflecting how I so often feel in the relationship, hollow, unheard and defeated. we are currently working through our issues but it has not been easy. I tried to also depict feelings of despair and the sense of feeling lifeless at times, just existing, hence the black and white. When you look at the canvas you can see certain words I had initially written show through.
